El Dorado’s Zachary McMillon didn’t have his best day at the 5A State Cross Country Championships. He finished a full minute off his normal pace, placing 34th out of 214 runners.

The rainy conditions put a damper on the finish to the season. But it couldn’t wash away the best year a cross country runner has had at El Dorado.

“Zach is going down as the best cross country runner in school history,” said El Dorado coach John Koonce. “He has the best overall time in school history, the highest place at state, and the highest place at conference.”

McMillon was named a finalist for Fall Sports Male Athlete of the Year.

The senior won three races this season and medaled in four others. He took first in the Lori McDougald Invitational, Wildcat Invitational and Run on the Grand Prairie.

McMillon earned All-Conference, finishing second at the 5A South Championships with a time of 16:33.11. He was fourth at the Bob Gravett Memorial and the Lakeside Invitational.

The date for the News-Times Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet will be announced later.
