Lady Bucks to start basketball season at Bearden

Smackover girls’ basketball coach Allie Banks took over a team in the spring that went 3-19 last season. The Lady Bucks went to work over the summer and will unveil the fruits of their labor Tuesday when they open the season at Bearden.

Banks said the team improved in the off-season.

“In preseason the focus was on building fundamentals, enhancing team chemistry and establishing a strong work ethic. We prioritized skill development, conditioning, and setting clear goals to create a solid foundation for the upcoming season,” said Banks, who hopes to establish a foundation.

“The biggest accomplishment over the summer, despite limited time with the team, was successfully laying the groundwork for the program moving forward. We focused on building relationships with the players and implementing a clear vision for our program. We organized a few intensive training sessions that emphasized fundamentals, teamwork, and a positive mindset, helping to create excitement and commitment as we progressed.”

Smackover’s roster includes seniors Taylor Darden and Ragan Robinson and junior Anna Spradley. They will be joined by a large sophomore class consisting of Hannah Sexton, Lynlee Boykin, La’Trinity Grant, La’Ziyria Buggs, Meagan Litton and Keilyn Freeman and freshman Izzy Burke.

“Our team's strengths include strong teamwork, good communication, and a solid work ethic. We have several players with versatile skills who can contribute in various positions,” said Banks. “As for weaknesses, we need to improve our consistency in shooting and defense. Additionally, enhancing our decision-making under pressure will help us perform better in close games.”

Banks’ plan is for the Lady Bucks to play an uptempo offense and be aggressive defensively.

“I anticipate it will evolve as the season progresses and our players develop. We'll adjust our strategies based on our strengths, weaknesses, and the unique dynamics of our team.”

As for the season, certainly Smackover will look to improve on its won-loss record. But attitude and off-court intangibles will be the key to getting the program headed in the right direction for years to come.

“My goal for the season is to help each player improve their skills, build strong teamwork, and foster a love for the game while having fun and competing with confidence.”
